Durango High School boys lacrosse humbled by Air Academy

A trip to the Front Range was a humbling experience at the right time for the Durango High School boys lacrosse team.

The Demons followed a 14-5 loss to Palmer on Friday in Colorado Springs with a 17-5 defeat at Air Academy on Saturday.

The two losses ended the regular season for the Demons, but the new crossover postseason format will begin this week and will determine the final Mountain League standings.

“We always want to play tougher competition to make us better as a program,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “We’re always looking to play non-conference 4A games to gauge where we are across the state. We have positives coming out of here for sure.”

Senior Trevor Gabbard scored two goals and added one assist for DHS (7-6, 4-4 Mountain League). Junior Oaken Oles also had two goals.

Eno Ulschafer added the Demons’ other goal. Jake Beekman had two assists.

DHS played fairly even with Air Academy except for on the scoreboard. DHS put up 23 shots to Air Academy’s 27, the difference being only three saves made in the match by DHS goalkeepers.

Groundballs also were fairly even at 25-20 in Air Academy’s favor, and the Kadets (8-3) had only two more faceoff wins.

DHS was down big early, 7-1 after one quarter.

“They came out on fire, and it was 12-4 at halftime,” Robinette said. “Academy is a good team that is highly ranked right now in 4A.”

The new Mountain League Crossover games will be played next week, with DHS likely hosting Vail Mountain (9-3, 6-3 ML) from the ML’s East division. This year, teams in the West division will host teams from the East.

DHS is the No. 4 seed in the West and will match up with No. 4 team in the East. That will determine the final league standings this year.

The Demons lost 13-8 at Vail Mountain earlier this year.

“We’re excited about the rematch. We lost earlier this year to them, but we felt good about the game and like our chances against them again,” Robinette said. “We’re hungry for the rematch, and we’ll work hard in practice and look to finish off the season with a win, and then it is out of our hands to get a spot in the playoffs or not.”
