Unselfish Bayfield girls soccer sails past Ignacio

The Bayfield High School girls soccer team had too much unselfishness Tuesday at Ignacio High School.

BHS head coach Jen Zelinski told her team to be more aggressive at halftime, and the Wolverines cruised to a 6-0 victory.

“They played really well as far as passing goes,” Zelinski said. “I told them they needed to shoot a little more.”

Koya Maniss opened the game with a fourth-minute goal for BHS (9-2, 9-2 Class 3A Region 5), and Savannah Kaufmann put the Wolverines up 2-0 at halftime.

BHS would have led 3-0 at the break if not for a missed penalty kick.

Andrea Zelinski scored in the 44th minute on a corner kick that bent in and fully crossed the goal line before an IHS player could clear it.

Kaylee Gomez, Bryannah Isiordia and Meaghan Mooney all scored for the Wolverines, too.

Maddy Duran and Andrea Zelinski each had two assists, and Mooney added one.

Alamosa’s 2-1 win over Pagosa Springs on Tuesday ended Bayfield’s chance at a league title, so the Wolverines will have to look to a wild-card bid to make the postseason.

“We’re ranked 11th (on Maxpreps.com), so that should help,” coach Zelinski said.

BHS next will host Salida at 4 p.m. Thursday at Wolverine Country Stadium, finally playing the non-league game that was supposed to open the season.

IHS will travel to Pagosa Springs at 4 p.m. Thursday.
