Durango girls soccer beats Grand Junction 3-0, strengthens state tournament case

Seven wins, one loss and one draw in the final nine games of the season have the Durango High School girls soccer team confident it will be one of the 32 teams selected to the CHSAA Class 4A state tournament.

The Demons wrapped up the regular season and Class 4A/5A Southwestern League play with an impressive 3-0 win Friday at Grand Junction

It put the Demons (8-6-1, 7-2-1 SWL) in second ahead of Grand Junction (9-5-1, 4-3-1 SWL) in the final league standings, with the Tigers still winning the 5A league title.

A Montrose (11-2-1, 6-1-1 SWL) win against Fruita Monument (6-8-1, 5-4-1 SWL) on Thursday gave the Indians the 4A league title, but DHS head coach Dalon Parker said his team should receive one of the at-large bids when selections are announced Sunday.

“This was a really, really big win. It puts us in a place to go for an at-large bid out of our region, and it also caps off a season where we went 7-1-1 in our last nine games played,” Parker said. “That’s a really good number that looks good for the committee.”

DHS senior star Lauren Milliet scored twice Friday, and freshman Taylor Klone continued her recent surge with another goal, her second in as many games. Lane Arnwine had an assist on one of Milliet’s goals.

DHS took a 1-0 lead into halftime, added a second goal halfway into the second half and iced the game with a goal with 12 minutes to play.

DHS senior goalkeeper Jessi Sigilito made between six and eight saves, Parker estimated.

“Jessi was tested, and she made big saves,” Parker said. “She played well on Grand Junction’s tough corners that were strong, attacking balls sent in. She also played one versus one and stopped them.”

After starting the season 1-6 with a five-game losing streak, Parker is thrilled with the way his team has come together and adjusted to new tactics on the field.

With a Division I signee in Milliet, the Demons know they can make noise once they get in the state tournament field.

“It’s good to see our young talent stepping up along with Lauren,” Parker said. “We will see where we will be come Sunday, and then we’ll get to work.”
