Bayfield girls soccer uses full squad to beat Center

There weren’t many opportunities for the junior varsity members of the Bayfield High School girls soccer team to play this season.

Their varsity teammates gave them some playing time in a 6-1 win over Center on Friday in Bayfield.

The Wolverines won a penalty kick five minutes into the game, which junior Maddy Duran easily converted.

Koya Maniss and Duran added a goal each within a minute-and-a-half to put BHS (11-3, 10-2 Class 3A Region 5) up 3-0.

BHS head coach Jen Zelinski inserted her younger players at halftime with the same score.

Maniss added a second goal in the second half, and Kaylee Gomez and Lydia Larson also scored.

Center (5-8-1, 3-5-1, Region 5) scored when a Viking broke through the back line and fired a shot from near the top of the 18-yard box. BHS keeper Kailee Millard got a leg on the shot, and it looked like it would sail harmlessly over the bar before dropping into the net.

“We had some of our younger players in playing positions they haven’t played before,” Zelinski said.

Zelisnski also said Millard made “five or six” saves, and none of Center’s other shots were “real threatening.”

With their regular season wrapped up, the Wolverines now will wait for Sunday’s playoff selections. BHS is ranked No. 19 by MaxPreps.com, and the site projects them to make the 32-team field. CHSAA uses the MaxPreps rankings and a list of other factors in selecting playoff wildcard teams.

The bracket will be released around 1 p.m. Sunday.
