First-inning fireworks propel Ignacio baseball past Dolores

IHS baseball picks up a sweep

In two games, the Bobcats combined to score 11 runs. That was good enough to earn the two biggest wins of the season for Ignacio High School.

The IHS baseball team picked up wins of 10-9 and 6-5 at home Saturday against Dolores, giving the Bobcats (5-10, 3-4 2A District 2) three consecutive wins with one game to play in the regular season.

“We finally showed some fire on the field and showed that we want to win some big games,” said IHS assistant coach Clay Miller. “We played defense and put the ball in play; that’s how you win games.”

The day was highlighted by a walk-off win in Game 2.

IHS led 5-1 after one inning thanks to having three batters hit by pitches and a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Timmy Plehinger, who later scored on a Joe Herrera single.

Dolores kept chipping back into Ignacio’s lead and tied it in the top of the seventh at 5-5.

Plehinger led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple, and he scored the game-winning run on a Herrera grounder to third, as the Dolores third baseman made an error on the throw to first trying to get Herrera out.

Juanito Medina, a sophomore, was the winning pitcher for IHS. He pitched a complete game, giving up 10 hits, three earned runs, two walks and one hit batsman. He struck out three.

“Juanito battled injuries and all day and still grinded it out for us on the mound,” Miller said.

Tucker Ward was dealing on the mound in the first game for IHS. The junior ace struck out 10 Dolores hitters in four innings of work. He gave up two unearned runs before giving way to Iaasic Peña, who gave up seven runs – five earned – in two innings. Peña was credited with the win.

“Tucker comes to play every day, and (Saturday) was no different,” Miller said of his starting pitcher. “He’s a leader by example.”

Austin McCaw came on and closed the seventh inning to earn a save for IHS.

The Bobcats scored six runs in the bottom of the first in the first game before adding two in the fifth and sixth innings.

Nathan Atencio had two hits and two runs batted in, Plehinger added two more hits and another 3 RBIs to give him five for the day, and Peña hadded two hits and two RBIs to give him three RBIs on Saturday.

The two wins were a bit of revenge for IHS, who had lost to Dolores 11-3 on April 11.

IHS will close out its regular season at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pagosa Springs.
