Dayne Rowley pitches a gem for Durango in loss to Montrose

But Demons can’t score enough to support pitcher

Dayne Rowley had his best performance in potentially the final game of his high school career.

The Durango High School senior pitched a complete seven innings Saturday at Montrose, but one bad inning defensively and a lack of offensive production saw the Demons lose 4-1 to the Indians. It was the final game of the regular season for both teams.

“Really, in all phases, we outplayed them, but we had one inning where they scored four runs,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said. “Dayne pitched well enough to shut them down completely, but they got a couple timely hits and we contributed some errors that let them score.”

Rowley gave up three hits and issued one walk while striking out seven batters.

“Really nice to see him come on stronger and stronger every outing. He pitched as good of a game as he has all season, and it was shame we couldn’t find the support for him,” Baker said.

Offensively, the Demons scattered six hits – all singles – with Andrew Selser and Hayden Sill both coming up with two hits.

The loss sent DHS to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in the Southwestern League. Montrose improved to 13-6 and 6-4 in the SWL.

DHS will find out if it will earn one of four at-large bids for the CHSAA Class 4A state tournament Tuesday. DHS ranked No. 12 in the state in the most recent wild-card points, giving them a good chance to earn one of those bids despite a tough season.

“We’ve been ranked high in the wild-card points all season thanks to our strength of schedule. That will help us considerably more than our results would make you believe,” Baker said. “That’s their seeding criteria, so we still have that outside potential to sneak in.”
