Durangoans to pitch in for Nepal

Several Durango restaurants to hold event on May 13
The Himalayan Kitchen and several other Durango restaurants May 13 will raise money for victims of the earthquake in Nepal.

Several Durango restaurants are combining for a May 13 event – “A Night for Nepal” – to raise money for victims of the earthquake-ravaged country.

The Himalayan Restaurant will host a dinner, cash bar and live music from Bob’s Yr Uncle for a minimum donation of $35 per person. Meanwhile, participating restaurants around Durango will donate 10 percent of the evening’s proceeds to the Karma and Jyamu Bhotia Foundation, a nonprofit that will forward the money to help people of Nepal rebuild. Karma and Jyamu Bhotia, Nepal natives, own the Himalayan.

The Himalayan event will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

“Durango has a very strong connection to Nepal, and the restaurant owners of Durango are showing their support to help the people of Nepal,” said Erica Max, who is organizing the event.

Max said she has contacted several dozen area restaurants. Among those that had committed to the event as of Monday are The Ore House, East by Southwest, Nini’s Taqueria, Ska Brewing and Gazpacho.

An earthquake that measured 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Nepal on April 25. The epicenter was northwest of Kathmandu. More than 7,300 people are dead from the earthquake, the Associated Press reported Monday.
