Bayfield baseball will host CHSAA 3A District 7 tournament as No. 3 seed

Late-season loss doesn’t hurt the Wolverines’ playoff seeding
Brody McGhehey and the Bayfield baseball team scooped up another postseason home game Wednesday.

Splitting its final doubleheader with Pagosa Springs didn’t hurt the Bayfield High School baseball team.

The Wolverines will be the No. 3 seed in the CHSAA Class 3A district playoffs and host No. 30 Trinidad.

BHS (16-3) was ranked No. 3 in both the CHSAA and MaxPreps.com rankings before last weekend.

“I think it might be the highest Bayfield’s been seeded. Two years ago they were the three also,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “It’s nice to hang onto that three spot after Saturday.”

No. 14 Sheridan and No. 19 Buena Vista will play in the bracket’s other game.

BHS and Trinidad are scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, while Buena Vista and Sheridan will face off at 12:30 p.m.

The winners of those games will play at 3 p.m. for a shot at the double-elimination state tournament next weekend.

“The only team we know a little bit about is Buena Vista, and we know very little,” Qualls said.

Qualls said Koby Close, who used to live in Bayfield, moved to Buena Vista, and his dad still coaches there.

Should weather affect the tournament, there are contingency plans for it to be played as early as Sunday or as late as Tuesday.

The Wolverines also hosted a district tournament last season, falling to the No. 28 seed La Junta as a No. 5 seed at home.

“The most important thing is to not get ahead of yourself, which I think we did last year,” Qualls said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re the 32 seed or the one seed. Anyone can lose at any time. There’s no givens.”

Qualls said he had an idea of which pitcher would start the opening game, but a recent death in one of the Wolverines’ families is affecting that decision.

“We’ll kind of see how everything goes with taking that into account,” Qualls said.
