Local thrift store hires new director

In first week, boss lowers store prices
Dunning

A new director took over the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store last week.

Keith Dunning, who has been with the nonprofit for five years, replaced Karen Streeter, who left the organization.

Dunning plans significant changes, including price changes that shoppers already have noticed.

In the first week, he began lowering the store prices to bring them more in line with average thrift-store pricing.

“It seems to be, of course, very well-received by our shoppers,” Dunning said.

He also plans to increase the variety of items the store accepts and the times they can be dropped off. For example, he hopes to broaden the type of electronics that the thrift store accepts.

Information about new store hours and newly accepted items will be available on the Humane Society’s website.

The thrift store is a big piece of the financial sustainability of the Humane Society, Dunning said.

In 2014, it generated $983,000 in sales, and $431,000 of that supported animal services, according the society’s annual report. The Humane Society’s total income for the year was about $2.2 million.

The Humane Society also recently appointed a new director of animal protection in March. Gary Skiba replaced Jon Patla, who retired after 12 years in the position.

The nonprofit is looking for an executive director, as well, said Sue Spielman, president of the board. The nonprofit has been without an executive director for 12 years, she said.
