From one corner of the state to the other, golf no comparison

This past weekend I traveled to the northeastern portion of Colorado, namely the Longmont/Greeley area to cover high school state baseball action.

As always, in my travels, I look for two things: working railroads and golf courses.

One is a hobby, the other an obsession.

I saw many boring flat-land layouts sprinkled with a few trees and fences not high enough to protect the speeding vehicles passing by.

The golfers seemed to be content on keeping their shots in play and trying to get in one more hole before torrential rains spoiled an otherwise golden opportunity to get out of weekend chores.

Getting to the point and localizing my thought – we are so lucky to have area courses with varied topography.

If you want out-of-the-box, rolled out, cookie cutter courses, head to the plains.

Give me the Four Corners for variety and challenge and the best groundskeepers in the business.

Hillcrest Golf Club

We heat up the tournament action May 24-25 with the annual Morehart-Murphy Auto Center Youth Baseball golf tournament.

There is a $500 prize and a $50 entry fee.

This is 36 holes of individual stroke play with 100 percent handicaps used for all flights.

Tee times begin at 8 a.m. both days, and prizes will be awarded on both the gross and net side of scoring.

Call the Hillcrest Pro Shop at 247-1499 to see if spots are still available.

Before this weekend’s event, check out the next Demo Days on May 22nd, as Mizuno comes to town to tout its latest equipment.

Hours for the demo run from 9 a.m.-noon.

Ladies Charity Golf Classic

The 25th anniversary will be held in San Juan County, New Mexico on June 9-10 at both Pinon Hills and the San Juan Country Club.

There still is room to enter, as organizers need individuals to team up with others to complete each twosome.

The entry fee is $170 per person, which includes greens fees, a Par-Tee Reception, breakfast and lunch both days, range balls and much more.

Go online at ladiescharitygolfclassic.org to fill out an entry form.
