The contractor on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s project to reduce danger from falling rocks on Colorado Highway 3 has finished all planned rock scaling.
Crews are now hauling away rock debris and preparing to install anchors and posts to support the mesh rockfall netting, CDOT said in a news release Monday.
The project remains on track to finish and reopen Highway 3 by Nov. 18, the department said. The project began ahead of schedule, but rainstorms slowed rock removal work.
The highway has been closed since Aug. 21. TK Construction of Grand Junction is doing work on a $1.56 million contract.
CDOT is reminding trail users that the single-track path between Sawmill Road and the Carbon Junction Trailhead is closed. The trail is directly below the rockfall mitigation work, CDOT said.
The Animas River Trail on the west side of the river is the recommended alternative.
