From the editor: Content changes to Herald print edition helps us evolve

Dear readers,

Starting Monday, you will see some changes to The Durango Herald print edition. These changes will improve your reading experience and provide an updated news presentation that keeps pace with our evolving industry.

We are repackaging our twice-monthly Sunday Southwest Life section to deliver news that reflects how we La Plata County residents live our lives in our corner of the state. Southwest Life now will be published every Thursday in the A section and will combine the Health & Fitness, Good Earth and Family & Relationships sections, which were published on Monday, Thursday and Sunday, respectively.

This new Southwest Life will bring you local news about our health, environment, families, children and culture. Our staff writers and contributing community columnists will continue to bring you informative, relevant and quality coverage of these topics, as well as briefs that contain notable information. Content that once was divided among four sections now will be consolidated in one convenient, robust section.

Our Sunday Consumer page will move to the back page of the C section. It will appear every first and third Sunday. On the first Sunday of each month, it will include the popular “From the Extension Office” column written by Wendy Rice, a Family and Consumer science agent for the La Plata County Extension Office.

Our twice-weekly Arts & Entertainment sections will be combined into one, larger Friday section filled with local stories and important information that can’t be found anywhere else in Durango. You can expect our continued, expanded coverage of the arts, theater, music and books to improve and be smarter and more relevant than ever before. We know that La Plata County residents are enthusiastic and dedicated supporters of the arts, and we look forward to helping you plan your nights and weekends and keeping you in touch with the multitalented artists of our community. Watch for changes coming soon.

We have moved our Sports section to the B section every day of the week. Look there for our stories about local sports and for coverage of national games and sports issues.

Finally, Ann Butler’s “Neighbors” column will be published in print once a week – on Wednesdays in the C section. Butler will provide ongoing coverage of social, nonprofit and community events throughout the week, and those stories will be published online more regularly.

On our website, we will continue to provide national stories about health, family and environment from the Associated Press and The Washington Post. We are making some minor navigation changes on our homepage so that it is easier for online readers to find this information. You will see a main link for Southwest Life. Once you click that link, you can navigate to the separate subjects within that section.

These content changes have resulted in Herald staff promotions.

Features editor David Buck has been promoted to assistant city/digital editor. Buck now will oversee the new Southwest Life section and will play a key role in delivering ongoing and updated content on our website as our main social media coordinator. A native of New York state with a degree from Hamilton College, Buck previously worked at The Glenwood Post in Glenwood Springs before joining the Herald as news editor from 2001 to 2008. He returned in 2010 as a wire news service editor and features editor. Buck can be reached at dbuck@durangoherald.com or 375-4615.

David Holub, our current design editor, has been promoted to Arts & Entertainment editor. Holub will oversee the weekly A&E section on Fridays, coordinating staff and freelance stories. Holub grew up in Littleton and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado. He also has an MFA in Creative and Professional Writing from Western Connecticut State University and taught rhetoric and writing at the University of Hartford from 2008 to 2013. He is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and earned a journalism degree from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. He worked part-time for the Springfield News-Leader, serving as a sports writer and an agate clerk before moving to Durango. Unterreiner can be reached at aaron@durangoherald.com or 375-4557.

Our content changes were made with input from newsroom editors, the leaders of Ballantine Communications Inc. and you, our dedicated readers. We are confident that you will embrace them and find them valuable.
