A little house made for little people

Proceeds from playhouse raffle will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

The 2015 version of the playhouse that is built annually as a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado is on view in Town Plaza. Raffle tickets to win the playhouse are on sale for $5.

Local contractors built the house when the program began about 15 years ago, said Jen Brown, business manager for BBBS. The hands-on portion of the project was transferred to Durango High School, where students in Shaun Smith’s carpentry class took over about eight years ago.

The house was auctioned first but has been awarded by a raffle since.

Contractors continue to provide materials and expertise, Brown said.

The house sports log siding and measures 12 feet by 9 feet and is 11 feet high. It consists of a main room and a closet area in the rear and has a hardwood floor and double-pane windows.

A rock-climbing wall is attached to a rear exterior wall.

The house can’t be bigger in order to remain within guidelines for transportation on the public thoroughfare, Smith said.

Smith said houses are designed in the fall and built starting in January.

Thirteen students participated in the design and construction of the latest house, Smith said.

Mitch Guffey and Bryce Gordon designed the house. The carpentry students were Jackson Berridge, Sebastian Foltz, Ryan Gideon, Jacob Weiser, Chad Shefferd, Hayden Sill, Jonathan Dubois, Michael Gudmundson-Shiedt, Antonio Peña-Riess, Joshua Thompson and Cameron Wiegert.

Information about raffle tickets is available by calling Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado at 247-3720.

Among the contractors and vendors who donate to the program are Troy Dyer at Veritas Fine Homes, Alpine Lumber, 4 Corners Roofing, Modern Renovations Inc., Monarch Iron Works and Residential Vaults, Precision Painting, Matt Leeder Construction, Commercial Flooring Services and Agritek Rent A Fence.
