McCoy, Phelps land on CHSAA All-State Second Team

Two of the Wolverines’ juniors land on All-State

The Front Range finally showed “little ol’ Bayfield” some respect.

Two members of the Wolverines’ baseball team, juniors Kelton McCoy and Zane Phelps, earned spots on the 2015 Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A Baseball All-State Second Team, voted by the state’s coaches.

“That’s an honor for both of us to get recognized,” said McCoy, son of Derek and Loresa McCoy. “It only helps the program, two kids from little ol’ Bayfield making the all-state team.”

Nine of the 11 first-team members were from the Patriot League, including 3A Player of the Year Lane Greiman of Eaton and Coach of the Year Kevin Fergus from Brush.

Both McCoy and Phelps made their first baseball all-state team as juniors – Phelps also was honorable mention all-state in football this year.

“I think it shows how far the Bayfield program has come in the past few years,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “I feel like we’re starting to get a lot more recognition across the entire state. Even when we travel up there to play, teams know who we are. Before, it was ‘who is Bayfield?’”

McCoy mashed his way onto the team, leading Class 3A in home runs (11) runs batted in (51) and slugging percentage (1.121).

No one came within four home runs, 10 RBIs and nearly 100 points of slugging percentage to him.

Still, McCoy was slotted on the second team.

“I was excited because all-state, that’s an honor no matter what team you’re on, but I was a little disappointed to see it was second team,” McCoy said.

McCoy credited the leap he made between his sophomore and junior seasons to Adam Morrissey, his summer baseball coach at the Strike Zone in Farmington.

“He taught me more about the mental side of the game, which pitches to swing at and when to swing,” McCoy said.

Phelps earned his way onto the team with a balanced season.

He hit .493 on the season with four home runs and 33 RBIs while appearing in 11 games as a pitcher, where he struck out 22 and posted a 1.44 earned-run average in 24.1 innings pitched.

“He’s always been a great ballplayer,” Qualls said of Phelps. “Him and Kelton have both come a long ways. They’re starting to learn the actual game of baseball. They’ve always had the talent, now they’re starting to learn.”

They figured to have a little more company on the squad, too.

BHS senior Matthew Knickerbocker didn’t even receive all-state honorable mention honors despite leading the state in runs scored at 41 while hitting .506 for the season with five home runs and 40 runs batted in.

He also threw a no-hitter while winning five games on the mound and posting a 1.71 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched.

“I thought he got the shaft a little bit,” McCoy said of Knickerbocker. “He had great hitting stats, and his pitching stats were really good. I don’t know what that was all about.”

Knickerbocker was honored on the all-conference team, however.

He, Taed Heydinger, McCoy, Brody McGhehey and Phelps were named to the All-Intermountain League First Team, and McCoy was the IML Player of the Year.

Noah Loutherback received honorable mention on the all-conference team .

“I feel like we had a full team of all-conference candidates,” Qualls said. “With the exception of one hiccup through league, the team played real well. I think those six guys deserved every bit of their honors.”
