Long course season opens for Durango Swim Club

Multiple meets usher in DSC’s busy season

Long course season has arrived for the Durango Swim Club.

The club sent swimmers to a multitude of meets recently from Albuquerque to Ouray.

Haley Benjamin led the way at the Lobo Invitational on June 5-6 in Albuquerque, winning the 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyles and the 200-m individual medley.

“It’s early on in the season and hard to go best times at the first long course meet of the year,” DSC head coach Suzanne Schieltz said in an email to The Durango Herald. “But there was some great competition there.”

Other members of the DSC made the short trip over to Cortez.

Strong showings from multiple sets of siblings led the team in Cortez.

Abbey Bowman was second in the 200-m freestyle while her older sister Jessica won the 200-m breaststroke and took third in the 200-m backstroke and 100-m breaststroke.

Betty Holcomb finished second in the 50-m backstroke and 100-m breaststroke and third in the 50-m freestyle, 100-m freestyle and 50-m breaststroke.

Maggie Holcomb won the 100-, 200- and 400-m freestyles, while Ruth Holcomb won the 100-m butterfly and was second in the 200-m IM.

Aileen McManus won the 100-m breaststroke and took second in the 50-m breaststroke, while her older sister Angela finished second in the 100-m freestyle and third in the 50-m freestyle, 100- and 200-m breaststroke.

Quinn Schmidt swept victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-m freestyles and the 100-m backstroke, while her younger sister Merin was second in the 50-m freestyle and backstroke.

Maple Damien won the 100-m freestyle and was second in the 100-yard IM.

Kaizer Lile won the 25-yard backstroke and freestyle.

Zada Lile took second in the 50-yard backstroke and freestyle.

Lauren McCourt finished second in the 25-yard backstroke and freestyle and was third in the 25- and 100-yard freestyle.

Lightning drastically affected last weekend’s meet in Ouray for the team, but they were able to put some younger swimmers on the podium.

Brigid O’Brian and Taylor Dean won the 100-m freestyle events.

The DSC’s next meet will be a home contest at the Durango Recreation Center on Saturday and Sunday.
