Lightning ignites 2 trees east of Vallecito

Firefighters responded to reports of wispy smoke Thursday morning east of Vallecito Reservoir.

The smoke was reported about 9 a.m. Columbine Ranger District firefighters hiked to the site, and they found two trees had been ignited by a lighting strike, according to a statement from Durango Interagency Dispatch.

The trees were burning about 2½ miles east of Vallecito Reservoir in the San Juan National Forest. The fire started in an area with high ground moisture, and there was low potential for it to spread.

Crews were working to put the fire out around noon.

A Mesa Verde National Park helicopter reconnaissance flight found no other fires this morning on the San Juan National Forest.
