Mountain bikers flew as high as the Millennium Falcon on Wednesday night on the Star Wars downhill section at the Overend Mountain Park.
Competitive mountain bikers and Durango DEVO riders all took to the course and raced against the clock to see how could wind downhill the fastest in the Zia Town Series: Star Wars Enduro. The summer series is put on by the Ska Brewing/Zia Taqueria MTB Race team
In the end, it was Phil Cowan who descended the fastest, finishing in 1 minute, 25.24 seconds. He narrowly escaped the pursuit of Taylor Borucki, who was chasing him down like a Star Wars TIE Fighter.
Cowan estimated some of the faster riders reached speeds of 30 or maybe even 40 mph, if they were pedaling.
“It’s awesome out here; berms and jumps and sweet rollers, and you can pump,” Cowan said. “It’s a great ride, and you can ride it on all kinds of bikes.”
