The Powerhouse Science Center is an asset to our community, and it would be unfortunate were we to lose it. That being said, it is absolutely unacceptable to request public funds without a clear business plan and financial transparency. As it stands now, I would not personally support the Powerhouse (despite having enjoyed some of its offerings), and expect that real accountability be required before city support is made available.

There is a plethora of worthy projects and causes in our area, and plenty of other needed infrastructure improvements. While the sum requested by the Powerhouse may be relatively modest, it needs to be given the same scrutiny that any request from a private source would be subject to. The treatment of government resources deserves the same respect as our own.

If the Powerhouse truly has a valid plan and a legitimate need, prove it. Durangoans value culture and education; we also value honesty and foresight. Hopefully, the leadership at the Powerhouse will respond in kind.
