Wolfie was on TV

Story of Silverton’s shy wolf-dog hybrid gains statewide audience

Wolfie, Silverton’s notoriously shy wolf-dog hybrid, was on TV on Wednesday, although he didn’t get 15 minutes of fame, just 3½.

Fox News Denver reporter Kevin Torres said the channel decided to do a segment on Wolfie after reading The Durango Herald story about Wolfie’s journey from despised outcast to beloved official town mascot two weeks ago.

The story was picked up by the Associated Press and Colorado Public Radio.

The segment on Wolfie was broadcast Wednesday on Fox News Denver and is available on www.kdvr.com as part of the show’s series featuring heartwarming stories from small towns across Colorado. Wolfie wasn’t the only star from Silverton – Mark Esper, reporter, editor and janitor at the Silverton Standard & Miner told the story of the oldest newspaper on the Western Slope.

Torres said shooting the segment with Fox News producer and photographer Anne Herbst “was a lot of fun. We had stumbled on the article that you folks had done on how much Wolfie means to the community. But we weren’t expecting to see him – let alone capture the kinds of moments we were able to capture between him and Melody,” referring to Melody Skinner, Wolfie’s best friend.

Overall, Torres said, “Wolfie was a hoot. He kind of blew our minds. It’s a story we’ll never forget.”

Wolfie also rated his own photo gallery on the KDVR website.
