Truck knocks out light pole, crunches car on north Main

A dump truck traveling southbound on Main Avenue near 24th Street swerved off the road, hit a parked car and knocked down a light pole around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

The driver could not stop because he was driving too fast, and he was in danger of rear-ending cars that were stopped on Main Avenue. Instead of hitting the cars, he swerved onto the sidewalk, hitting a parked car and the light pole, said Sgt. Mike Slack with the Durango Police Department.

The parked car was in the lot at Durango Animal Hospital and owned by hospital employee Carol Williams. Law enforcement closed one lane of southbound traffic to clean up the accident.

The driver of the dump truck, who was not identified, was not injured, and he was cited for careless driving, Slack said.

Slack didn’t know what company the driver was working for, and the truck did not have any mechanical problems that caused the accident.

After the crash, the light pole was stuck under the truck and had to be removed. La Plata Electric Association disconnected the light pole.
