Durango, calling all small-business entrepreneurs

Zalneraitis

A study released Monday ranked Durango as the seventh best place to start a business in Colorado.

Durango had a natural disadvantage because it is so far from Denver, but a high average revenue, at $723,278, and low unemployment rate, at 4.1 percent, helped the town make the top 10.

NerdWallet, a consumer research company, selected the best destinations for entrepreneurs from a pool of 85 towns with at least 500 businesses.

Researchers also looked at the percentage of businesses with paid employees, the number of businesses per 100 people and other factors.

Durango was beat out by municipalities with well-known brands such as Aspen and Steamboat Springs. Mountain towns as a whole did well in the study, and researchers noted tourism is a growing force in the state economy.

It can also help expose potential entrepreneurs to this area, Roger Zalneraitis, executive director of the La Plata County Economic Development Alliance, said in a statement.
