Colorado College blanked by France at World University Games

Durango’s Lauren Milliet earned her second start in as many games for Colorado College, representing the United States, at the World University Games.

Milliet scored the team’s lone goal in a 1-0 win against South Africa to open Group D play on July 2, but none of the Colorado College Tigers were able to find the back of the net in a 5-0 loss to France on Saturday.

France’s Valerie Gauvin scored four of the team’s five goals at the Mokpo Football Center in Gwangju, South Korea. Gauvin is one of 17 French players with professional experience.

“(Saturday) was a great day in terms of getting real international experience,” Colorado College head coach Geoff Bennett said in a news release. “I’ve been around Division 1 soccer for a very long time, and I have not seen a team as fluid and as talented as the France team we just faced.”

Milliet played 67 minutes after playing the entire game against South Africa. She registered one shot but did not put it on frame.

Laura Bourgain scored the second of France’s five goals in the 10th minute. Gavin opened the scoring in the first minute of play.

Canada now leads Group D with six points, while France and the U.S. each have three points. The Americans must beat Canada at 1:30 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time July 6 to have a chance to advance to the semifinals. France will have a chance to also secure three more points against South Africa (0-2).

“This will help our team in the long run, as we now know what it takes to play at the top level,” Bennett said. “We need to rebound quickly to get ready to put our best first foot forward versus Canada.”
