Military recruiting office evacuates after a threat

Threat on social media led to scare

The local recruiting station for the Navy, Army and Marines was evacuated Thursday after a threat was made on social media, according to a spokesman with the Durango Police Department.

The office was voluntarily closed after the threat was received around 3 p.m., said Lt. Darrell Robertson, spokesman with the police department.

He could not disclose the nature of the threat or the social-media platform used to send the message.

The FBI was notified that military offices were threatened, and it was not clear if the FBI or the local police would continue the investigation, he said.

He was unable to release any additional information.

Efforts to reach someone at the recruiting station, located at 400 South Camino del Rio in Bodo Industrial Park, were unsuccessful Thursday evening.

Ross Taylor, public-affairs officer for the Navy in Phoenix, said he was not aware of similar threats made Thursday at other recruiting stations. He was not sure about the nature of the threat or the social-media platform on which it was made.

“Things like this can sometimes be difficult, because it could have been anybody from anywhere in the world,” he said.
