Sunset magazine gets tips from locals

The August issue of Sunset magazine’s “Ask a Local” feature focuses on Durango, asking Mary Monroe Brown, executive director of Trails 2000, and Kris Oyler, co-founder and owner of Steamworks Brewing Co., for some tips to enjoy our town.

Sunset magazine likes Durango.

Not only did the publication name two of four finalists in the Best Cultural Attraction (in the West) category from our area – Mesa Verde National Park won – but now Durango is featured in Sunset’s “Ask a Local” feature in the August issue.

The locals interviewed? Mary Monroe Brown, executive director of Trails 2000, and Kris Oyler, co-founder/owner of Steamworks Brewing Co. and El Moro Spirits & Tavern.

Their picks? The iconic Strater Hotel and Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, but also the Harvest Grill, Wild Horse Saloon, Durango Craft Spirits, Horse Gulch, 2nd Avenue Sports, Bread, Michel’s Corner, There’s No Place Like Home, Urban Market and El Moro.

Through it all runs the Animas River.

“You can fish it, tube it, raft it, bike it, walk it, run it,” Oyler said. “Sometimes, it’s just great to take your lunch and sit down on a rock by the river and watch the water go by.”
