A man who was found facedown Thursday afternoon in the Animas River between Albertsons and the DoubleTree Hotel died later about 8:45 p.m. at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

Coroner Jann Smith said authorities still do not know who the man is.

Boaters found the man unresponsive in the river, and they stopped to provide CPR, said Karola Hanks, fire marshal with the Durango Fire Protection District.

The man was found in shallow water along the banks of the river, said Lt. Darrell Robertson, a spokesman with the Durango Police Department.

Medics responded later, and they took the man to the hospital.

Robertson could not identify the man because he was not carrying any identification.

Police are investigating the incident, but they do not have any indication of foul play, he said.

The police believe the man went into the river of his own volition.

“It looks like he got into the river, and something happened. ... He slipped or something,” Robertson said.

The man could be in his late 20s to early 40s, Hanks said.

No further details were immediately available.
