Service a reminder of what is important

The Morrissey family is a vital part of the Durango community. Jeff Morrissey recently passed away and his celebration of life service reminded me why I love living in this community. Such a diverse group of people came to offer their respect and condolences to his wife, Nikki, their children, grandchildren, his siblings and extended family, and to recognize all that Jeff did for this community.

Jeff was truly singular in many ways, and his love of politics started early in life. His son, Patrick, when delivering a touching eulogy, reminded us that Jeff was 17-years old when U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy visited Durango when the town hosted the state’s Democratic convention. Jeff’s father was one of the organizers, and assigned Jeff to run errands for Sen. Kennedy’s staff. Jeff delivered groceries to the plane and was met by Kennedy, who later sent him a personal thank-you note. Soon after, Kennedy was elected president of the United States. Friends who have visited the Morrissey home saw the Kennedy memorabilia prominently displayed in the family room.

Jeff later served on the Durango City Council, the water board, and he and Nikki have owned several businesses. Jeff loved this community, and it is unfortunate that because of many health issues in his later life that he was unable to be out and about sharing his vision and dreams.

Seeing so many familiar Durango faces at Jeff’s service reminded me of the Durango I grew up in and what is important in life – family and friends. It was an honor to know Jeff Morrissey, and his passion for this community inspires me to encourage all of us who are fortunate to live here to remain grateful and to stay engaged in keeping this community vibrant.
