Humane Society has two reputations

I have followed the stories and letters about the La Plata County Humane Society with interest. I’m still trying to get a handle on the true character of the organization.

I relocated here last fall, and, as an animal advocate, I gathered some information before moving. I was delighted to hear that LPCHS offers great care, has a robust volunteer program, is very successful with adoptions and so on. I was especially glad to find out from a staff member they don’t need to euthanize for space and that they really care about stray animals, including feral/barn cats.

As the leader of a spay/neuter/rescue group in my former county, I wanted to offer volunteer help with marketing, writing, social media, the website, events and/or other assignments when I arrived. I was told I could drop by and help animals socialize and scoop litter boxes whenever I wanted after an orientation.

I pressed a little, setting up two appointments to meet with a staff member in January. Arriving after a 40-minute drive, I was told the staff member was unavailable both times. I asked to be contacted when convenient – I’m still waiting.

What’s more, as part of introducing myself and offering to help, my old organization and I donated $1,000 to LPCHS last fall. I have never received a receipt, let alone a thank-you note.

So, which is the real LPCHS? The one I hear good things about or the one that doesn’t appear to be managed very well? I’m dismayed about my experience, not for my sake but for what it might mean for animals in need in the Durango area.
