Durango Swim Club laps competition at home meet

Strong performances from the girls side helped the Durango Swim Club dominate its most recent home meet.

The DSC’s girls scored 2,150 points, beating second-place Salida by nearly 1,000 points, and the DSC’s boys team finished fourth with 424 points to take third and help the club to an overall team title.

In particular, the club’s youth showed it can compete in the eight-and-under category.

Aileen McManus (6) won five events by herself: the girls 50-meter breaststroke, 50-meter freestyle, 25-meter freestyle, 25-meter backstroke and 25-meter breaststroke.

Kaizer Lile (6) won the boys 50-meter breaststroke and the 25 meter breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle.

“We have a solid group of 8 & unders that really love swimming,” DSC head coach Suzanne Johnson said in an email to The Durango Herald. “They will be the future of the Durango Swim Club, and they will be fast.”

As for the club’s present, Joci Earl won both the girls 400- and 800-meter freestyle events.

Jessica Bowman was right behind her in the 400-meter freestyle in second, finishing with a best time.

Ruth Holcomb won the 200-meter individual medley and finishes second in the 100-meter IM and 100-meter butterfly.

Mira Joyner took second in the girls 100- and 200-meter backstroke events.

Sadie McAilney was third in the girls 200-meter individual medley.
