Flash-flood watch in effect through early Monday

On Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service placed a good portion of Western Colorado on a flash-flood watch that will remain in effect until 3 a.m. Monday morning.

Andrew Lyons, an intern meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said storms are already forming near Durango.

“They’ll be moving across the area in the next couple of hours. In the early evening, when we lose heat from the sun, is when we expect rain all around the area,” he said early Sunday afternoon.

The flash-flood watch is in effect for southwestern Colorado and parts of southeastern Utah.

According to the National Weather Service’s website, “the flash-flood threat is greatest for small streams. Creeks, normally dry wash beds, slot canyons, slick rock areas, and burn scars. Heavy rainfall can also cause mud debris flows and rock slides.”

Anyone intending to drive or be outside should monitor the forecasts, it says.
