Howard Grotts takes silver at UCI U23 Mountain Bike World Cup event in Canada

Durangoan and Fort Lewis College alumnus Howard Grotts finished second at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup U23 cross country race Sunday in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebecy.

France’s Titouan Carod won the event, finishing the four-lap race in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 18 seconds.

Grotts crossed the line 26 seconds later.

Current FLC rider Ryan Standish, a junior this upcoming season, took 34th in 1:27:56.

Sepp Kuss, a CU-Boulder rider who graduated from Durango High School, was shortly behind him in 36th at 1:29:12.

The Skyhawks continued to represent well, with Stephan Davoust finishing 41st and Payson McElveen 49th.

The silver medal put Grotts in fourth place in the overall season standings with 205 points.

Spain’s Pablo Rodriguez Guede leads with 250 points.

In the elite cross country race, Durango resident Ben Sonntag was 62nd, one lap behind winner Nino Schurter of Switzerland, who finished the seven-lap race in 1:27.19.

DHS graduate and Stanford University rider Kaylee Blevins finished 21st in the U23 women’s cross country race, one lap behind winner Jenny Rissveds of Sweden, who crossed the line in 1:18:52.
