Durango teen arrested after pulling BB gun

Confrontation occurred in City Market bread aisle

A 17-year-old Durango boy has been arrested on suspicion of felony menacing for pulling a BB gun on a customer in the bread aisle at south City Market.

Durango resident Isaiah McCook, 30, was trying to reach for a loaf of bread at 10:57 p.m. Sunday, but he was being blocked by a group of young men standing in the aisle, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the Durango Police Department.

McCook said he tried to excuse himself so he could reach the loaf of bread, and a man in the group became rude, the release said. They got into a verbal argument, and a man in the group opened his jacket and partially pulled a handgun from his waistband, the release said.

McCook walked away, and he notified a store employee, who called police.

The suspect was identified as Jonah Keith Morrison. He was in possession of a BB gun that looked identical to a 1911-style, semi-automatic handgun, the release said. He also was in possession of brass knuckles and had consumed alcohol, the release said.

Morrison admitted he was in a confrontation with McCook and that he pulled out the BB gun in a threatening manner, police said.

Morrison was taken to detox before being taken to the Robert E. DeNier Youth Services Center, where he was booked for felony menacing and possession of an illegal weapon.
