Rangers monitoring small fire in San Juans

The Columbine Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest is monitoring a small lighting-started fire that ignited Sunday between Lemon and Vallecito reservoirs.

The fire was less than a tenth of an acre in size Tuesday, and it was burning within the perimeter of the Missionary Ridge Fire burn area.

The Forest Service is not actively fighting the small fire because it is slow-moving and consuming dead wood and other vegetation, said Chris Tipton, fire management officer with the San Juan National Forest.

The fire was smoldering and creeping along the forest floor.

The risk of the fire spreading is low because wet soil and more rain is forecast for the weekend, the statement said.

“It’s the best possible scenario as far as weather goes,” Tipton said.

A small amount of smoke may be visible from nearby county roads.

A resident reported the fire, which is burning about two miles northwest of private property.
