RMAC soccer teams rank well in preseason NCAA Division II polls

Colorado Mesa men and Colorado Mines women ranked high in preseason polls

Two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference soccer teams reached the Final Four of the NCAA Division II tournament last season and were rewarded in this year’s preseason polls.

The Colorado Mesa men’s team and Colorado Mines women’s team were both ranked No. 4 in their respective National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II polls released Thursday.

Defending national champions Lynn University on the men’s side and Grand Valley State on the women’s side both retained their sports atop the polls.

Colorado Mesa ended the 2014 season at 19-1-1 with a 2-0 loss to the University of Charleston in the national semifinals, and Mines lost 1-0 to Rollins College at the same stage to finish with a 16-2-6 record.

No other RMAC teams were ranked or received votes in the polls.

The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team will open the season Sept. 4 at No. 20 Midwestern State then face No. 12 St. Edward’s two days later on Sept. 6.

No FLC women’s opponents other than Colorado Mines were ranked in the preseason poll.

FLC’s men’s team finished at 11-8 last season and lost to UC-Colorado Springs 5-4 in overtime in the first round of the RMAC Tournament.

The Skyhawks will visit the Mavericks next season Oct. 4 in Grand Junction and won’t get to play them at Dirks Field in the regular season.

The Colorado Mines women also won’t make an appearance at Dirks Field this regular season, but FLC will travel there for a Friday night showdown Oct. 9.

As for the Skyhawks’ women’s team, they finished last year at 6-8-5 in newly appointed head coach Jimmy Hall’s first season when he was operating under the interim tag.

FLC’s women’s team will open the 2015 season at Midwestern State on Sept. 3. Midwestern State is entering its second season under head coach Damian Clarke, who left Fort Lewis last season.
