Encouraging letter inspires teacher

I am the sixth grade humanities teacher at Mountain Middle School, and I recently received an unexpected letter and gift in my mailbox. The eloquent letter expressed gratitude for my efforts to motivate middle school students to become eager and effective writers. The letter was not from a student or even a parent; it was from a community member who simply heard of our work at Mountain Middle School.

He wrote, “My experience has been that if students either become overly frustrated with the art of writing or get away without really having to work at it, especially in the middle school classes, then they never acquire the basics to become effective writers later in life. So, here’s a token of my appreciation to you for hanging in there, for keeping your students mindful of the importance of clear expression.”

The letter elaborated a bit more and also included a very generous check. Needless to say, I am flabbergasted, surprised, and, most of all, grateful. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank this generous benefactor for his encouragement, support and kindness. He has given me fuel to begin another year of teaching kids to develop a passion for reading and writing.
