County commissioners appoint new surveyor

Steve McCormack is no stranger to the roll

La Plata County commissioners Tuesday unanimously appointed seasoned surveyor Steve McCormack to serve as interim county surveyor, replacing Larry Connolly, who died in July.

McCormack has a track record as La Plata County’s surveyor, first earning that office in 1986 and then in 1990. In addition to those two elected terms, McCormack was appointed to finish an unexpired term in 1996.

A Durango resident for nearly 40 years, he is a licensed land surveyor in Colorado and Arizona.

McCormack said Tuesday he is undecided on whether or not he will run in the November 2016 county general election to retain his seat.

“I decided to fill in, because I feel qualified to do it,” he said. “I’m honored they selected me, and I feel it’s something I can do well.

“There used to be much more clerical work involved with the surveyor’s job. That has changed,” McCormack said. “It has morphed into more of an advisory position to the commission in cases of land issues.”

McCormack will hold the surveyor’s position until January 2017 when the newly elected surveyor assumes the duties.
