County Road 240 closed briefly for a gas leak

Durango Fire Protection District closed a section of Florida Road (County Road 240) because of a gas leak for about an hour and 10 minutes Tuesday afternoon.

A company doing construction in the area knocked a gas meter off, said Capt. Pete Tuck of the Durango Fire Protection District. Atmos Energy was called in to do the repairs.

The gas leak occurred in the 1700 block of Florida Road. The road was closed at East Animas Road (County Road 250) on the southwest side.

“They like us on scene in case a fire starts,” Tuck said.

The DFPD kept the road closed until Atmos could check to see that there was no underground leak as a result of the incident.

The leak occurred at the worst possible time for the first day of school, about 2:20 p.m.

School District 9-R sent out an automated message that parents picking up students might be delayed because of the closure. Staff remained on site at Riverview Elementary School until parents were able to get there, Superintendent Dan Snowberger said in the message.

Deputies from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office handled traffic.
