Durango boys golf 5th at Cobble Creek

DHS golf sees tough conditions at Cobble Creek

Overnight rain made Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose play even longer than its 6,982-yard measurement Thursday.

On a tough course with slow conditions, the Durango High School boys golf team backed up its win Wednesday at Devils Thumb Golf Club in Delta with a fifth-place finish Thursday.

The Demons combined for a team score of 242. Grand Junction won the event with a 226 led by a 1-under 71 from Canon Olkowski and a 1-over 73 from Trevor Olkowski.

Fruita Monument’s Troy Dangler was the medalist with a 6-under 66.

Durango’s round of the day went to senior Cy Spicer, who shot a 78 in his second tournament of the season to back up a 2-over 74 shot Wednesday.

Senior Eric Walker had his best round of the young season with an 80.

“The round Eric shot (Thursday) was a very good round on a tough course,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said. “Cobble Creek played longer with all the rain.”

DHS senior Cameron Barnhardt struggled with a few penalty strokes and finished with an 84 in his second event of the season.

Lucas Robbins, a junior, moved up to varsity Thursday because senior Cory Gillespie became sick overnight and was unable to compete. He stepped in and shot an 87.

“It’s good to get him some mileage for this season and as he builds into his senior season,” Rawles said of Robbins.

Kobe Szura shot a 105.

The Demons’ junior varsity team was solid again Thursday and shot a 262, led by Blake Martin’s round of 85.

Kyle Pritchard shot 88, and Robby Grogan finished at 89. Luke Napier got in the mix and scored 92.

DHS will have a few days to practice before playing at Pagosa Springs next week. The Demons will play only one tournament next week after playing four the first two weeks of the season.
