Raising school spirit? Not according to 9-R

This screenshot shows the home page of the new website www.durangodemons.com, a commercial website that promises to document the doings at Durango High School – much to Durango 9-R’s chagrin.

With the start of school comes a new website for the Durango High School Demons’ community, but it might not be around for long.

The site, www.durangodemons.com, is not affiliated with School District 9-R in any way. Run by DigitalTown Inc., a company based in Burnsville, Minnesota, it plans to feature coverage of sports and club activities, the company said in a news release, “including news, scores, schedules, community directory, photos, videos, livestreams, as well as archival content such as yearbook images.”

District 9-R is not amused.

“This has not been authorized through our department,” said Julie Popp, communications and marketing director for the district. “It does violate our policies, and we will be working with officials to take the appropriate steps to deactivate the site. We cannot endorse third-party solicitations for district programs, including athletics.”

The company, which is hiring writers, photographers, videographers and advertising sales people, will derive its income from advertising and a team store with gear and apparel.
