Big Picture school is shuttered Friday

Paul Schwarm with ServPro cleans the building housing Durango Big Picture High School and The Liberty School after melted snow and ice on the roof made its way inside on Wednesday afternoon.

Big Picture High School will be closed Friday after a flood damaged the north side of the building earlier this week.

School will resume Monday, but it is likely the schedule will differ from a regular school day, said Julie Popp, spokeswoman for Durango School District 9-R.

A main drain pipe to the roof got blocked at the school Wednesday, causing many drainage pipes throughout the building to back up and water to pool on the roof, said Keith Harlan, owner of ServPro, the company cleaning the building.

The water flowed through crevices in the ceiling, through walls, and it was pooling in the crawl spaces, Harlan said.

The roof is secure, but it is likely the carpet, floor tile and ceiling tile will need to be replaced, Harlan said.
