Durango cross country starts strong in Colorado Springs

Boys team wins elite 4A event in Colorado Springs

Nicholas Turco led a dominant start for the Durango High School cross country team.

He finished fifth overall at 16 minutes, 40.5 seconds in the five-kilometer in the boys Class 4A Green race Friday at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede. The race was held on the state championship course at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs.

There also was a “blue” division for Class 4A that featured slower final times.

The Demons won the meet as a boys team with 61 points, while their closest competitor in second was The Classical Academy with 129.

Cross country meet scores are calculated by adding the individual places together, and lower scores are better.

David Moenning took 11th in 17:09.2 with Seamus Millet and Jordan Helms behind him in 12th and 13th in two-second intervals.

Harry Steinberg was 20th at 17:46.4, Isaac Ducker took 28th in 18:04.3, Tommy Pannell finished 49th in 18:22.8 and Will Swenson was 76th in 18:53.8.

“We’re a strong team on paper and ran every bit as well as they are on paper,” DHS head coach David McMillan said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We didn’t run our top man (Benjamin) Lachel. He had a slight thigh strain.”

Norman Tanner from The Classical Academy won the individual race in 16:09.4.

Durango’s girls team finished 11th out of 18 teams led by Abby Scott in 25th at 21:03.4.

Defending state champion Katie Rainsberger from Air Academy torched the girls field to win in 18:10.5.

Sarah Smagacz took 41st in 21:37.5; Emily Edwards-Colsman finished 71st in 22:36.7; Mary Fenberg was 72nd in 22:37.4; Anna Smagacz took 83rd in 22:59.8; Marit May finished 98th in 23:39.8; Alle McKown finished 100th in 23:48.4; Maggie Wigton took 104th in 24:01.4 and Elli Trussel was 107th in 24:12.8.

“Really young girls team,” McMillan said. “There’s one senior on the squad.”

The state championship course was changed this year, and this event was the firs time teams got to test it out.

“They got rid of what was the big hill. It runs faster, especially at the beginning,” McMillan said. “I told them go out in control and run a build-in race, pick it up each successive mile. The followed the game plan really well.”

DHS next will run at the Battle Mountain Classic on Sept. 5 at Beaver Creek Resort.
