Mend fences, break bread, make deals

A lovely ceremony took place in Havana, Cuba, recently. After more than a half century of sanctions and other tense moments, the United States offered an olive branch by opening the doors to a peaceful coexistence. Our new embassy there is a baby step.

So many other areas in our world need to work with us to achieve this renaissance going on in Cuba now, not decades later. During the Bay of Pigs in Cuba, ordered by JFK, I was 11 years old. The Cold War was as dangerous as what is happening now. My elementary teacher told students to get under their desks if we got bombed. Better judgment by powerful leaders kept the bombing from happening. Today, there is talk of a war with Iran, without a deal supported by hawkish elites with bomb-proof luxury bunkers. Other nations are anxious to have a unanimous vote for the nuclear deal on the table and really don’t want to be radiated like Japan was 70 years ago.

Instead of being blown to kingdom come, let’s mend the fences and break bread with our enemies and make them our friends. If good things are happening in Cuba, there is no excuse to not reach out for better outcomes elsewhere.
