Durango softball run-ruled by Palisade twice

DHS softball swept in season opening series

Palisade singled the Durango High School softball team to death in the Demons’ season opening doubleheader Saturday in Palisade.

The Bulldogs amassed 21 hits in two run-rule wins, 13-3 and 16-6, and 17 of them were singles.

Durango’s pitchers also struggled to find the strike zone, walking 22 Palisade batters.

Palisade (2-0) did most of their damage in the fourth inning of the early game.

The Bulldogs drove in 11 runs after tacking on one in each of the first and second.

The Demons (0-2) scored three in the top of the fifth inning, but the game ended after they couldn’t cut the deficit to fewer than 10 runs.

Junior Rebekah Ford and sophomore Joie Raybourn each drove in one run in Game 1.

Senior Cami Brisbee started in the circle in Game 1.

She allowed six hits and six earned runs in three innings of work, striking out two.

Freshman Morgan Allen relieved her in the fourth and gave up seven runs on four hits.

Only two runs were earned.

Paige Orman picked up the win for Palisade, striking out 11 in five innings of work.

In Game 2, Palisade spread out the damage a little more.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-3 after two innings before scoring six runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to end the game one inning early.

Senior Shilo Gillen had two RBIs to lead DHS, and junior Katrina Chandler had three hits in four at bats.

Ford and Raybourn both had two hits, too.

Palisade Freshman Eimy Aguirre had four runs batted in, and Piper Davis drove in tree for the Bulldogs.

The Demons did steal four bases in the game.

Danica Dudley took the loss for DHS after allowing seven runs, six earned on one hit and eight walks in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Durango’s next series is a doubleheader against Dolores Huerta Prep starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Aspen Field on the campus of Fort Lewis College.
