Airport had busy Christmas season

Passengers arrive at the Durango-La Plata County Airport in 2012. The airport had a busy Christmas season in 2014, according to a recent report.

The Durango-La Plata County Airport had a busier Christmas season in 2014 than it did in 2013.

The number of people boarding a plane increased about 12.25 percent from 13,841 to 15,537, according to the latest activity report.

Overall in 2014, the total number of people boarding in Durango grew 0.81 percent, up to 193,537 from 191,980 in 2013.

The number of people boarding in Durango is a key metric in measuring airport growth.

The Durango City Council and the La Plata County commissioners are considering a major airport terminal expansion based on current and future traffic predictions at the airport.

The two boards will publicly discuss the issue in February.

An open house for the public examining three options for terminal expansion will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Transit Center lobby.
