Bayfield volleyball comes out of shell at Cortez

Wolverines beat Montezuma-Cortez to open the season

Both sides of the Bayfield High School volleyball team showed themselves Tuesday.

The Class 3A No. 8 Wolverines were explosive and young in a 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-18, 25-21) road at Montezuma-Cortez.

BHS (1-0) hasn’t quite settled who will do the setting this year, and ran a 6-2 with multiple setters in the first set.

During the second set, the Wolverines showed some of their youth but found effectiveness attacking with sophomore Sydney Gabbard at setter in a 5-1 system in the second set.

That freed up junior Maddi Foutz utilize more of her all-around game.

“It’s nice to have some flexibility with this young team,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said.

Maddi Foutz led the team with nine kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Kylee McCoy had what coach Foutz called a “breakout performance with seven kills.

Emily Bauer picked up six kills, while Ashley Mottin and Jade Pascale both had five.

The Wolverines will have to rely on players who don’t have as much starting experience to come together and learn new roles.

“We don’t know who’s going to develop sooner than later,” coach Foutz said. “It’s our hope that leadership will really start to happen and bring these kids together. This is a really selfless team. They care a great deal about each other.”

They’ll be tested strongly this weekend at Lewis Palmer’s tournament Saturday in Monument.

BHS opens with Class 4A No. 4 Pueblo West at 1:30 p.m.

“We’re going against some big guns this year. I like the attitude they have on the court,” coach Foutz said. “I like the attitude they have on court. The last 10 points of the match were the best 10 points of the match.”
