Tuesday night showed why Ignacio High School keeps scheduling Kirtland Central for the Bobcats’ season opener.
The Broncos always know how to put up a fight.
Kirtland Central claimed the team’s fifth consecutive season-opening meeting 3-1 (28-26, 17-25, 25-15, 25-12) in the Bobcats’ first game back in their home gym.
IHS (0-1) largely played at the SunUte Community Center last year while the high school was being renovated.
The Bobcats rallied after a tough first set to take an early 5-4 lead in the second set.
They didn’t relinquish it to win 25-17, ending the second set on an ace by junior Alex Forsythe.
The Broncos controlled the next two sets, leading 16-6 at one point in Set 3.
IHS now has lost five consecutive matches dating back to last season.
The Bobcats next will play Monte Vista at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 in Ignacio.
