Youth golfers get new opportunity at Hillcrest Golf Club

Hillcrest announces a brand new program for fall
Youth golfers will have a new opportunity to keep working on their skills this fall, as Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango announced a new Junior Golf program for the season.

Don’t put away the golf clubs yet, young Durango players.

Hillcrest Golf Club and local golf coach Kirk Rawles announced a new Junior Golf program set to begin Sept. 14 at the local course.

“We’ve been trying to figure out putting something together for the kids to have an opportunity to keep playing once Junior Golf is over in the summer. We are going to test it out one day a week this fall and see what the response is and look to grow it into the spring,” Rawles said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

Rawles, who is the head coach of the Durango High School boys and girls varsity teams, won’t be able to work with the players himself, but the quality staff at Hillcrest, led by head pro John Vickers, will lead the group that will meet every Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. from Sept. 14 through Oct. 12.

“This is the beginning stages for what will hopefully grow into a more well-rounded opportunity for young players to develop and have a place to go for after-school activities on the early-release Mondays”, Vickers said in a news release. “As young athletes gravitate toward participating, the hope is to add additional days next spring.”

Rawles said the program will help fill the void in developing young players before they reach the high school level. And the young athletes will share the course with the Durango boys golf team and be able to pick up on what the varsity players are working on.

Rawles also said some of the younger players who may have to miss some weeks of summer Junior Golf because of family vacations will get another chance to keep developing.

In the news release, Rawles also noted the trend in boys and girls high school golfers, saying anywhere from 26 to 36 boys come out each year while only seven to nine girls participate.

“We are hopeful to see the biggest growth and be able to offer more exposure, especially for the girls,” he said.

The program will cost $40 for the duration, and that includes instruction and range balls. Contact the Hillcrest Golf Club pro shop at 247-1499 for more information.
