Rain not taking a holiday this weekend

Cooler, wetter weather forecast for Labor Day weekend
Blue skies and fluffy white clouds Thursday afternoon belie the forecast of showers and thunderstorms predicted through Saturday during the Labor Day Weekend.

Attendees at the motorcycle rally should keep their slickers handy as showers are expected during Labor Day weekend.

The National Weather Service forecasts a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day Friday, and a 40 percent chance at night. Saturday and Saturday night are also predicted to bring showers and thunderstorms, while Sunday is expected to be sunny.

“All this moisture is being pulled from Tropical Depression 14E into the Southwest,” said meteorologist Megan Stackhouse from the Grand Junction Office of the National Weather Service. “All the cloud cover over the area Thursday slowed it down, but it will be more widespread (Friday).”

Saturday’s storms will not be as widespread as Friday’s, she said, and while the chance for storms returns Monday, they’re more likely to occur in the high country.

Highs throughout the weekend are predicted to be in the low to mid-70s.

Slick roads and heavy traffic mean drivers should take care on the roads.

The Southern Ute Police Department will continue its “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through the weekend.

More moisture will likely come during the middle of next week.

“It will be similar to what occurred through the summer, with storms developing late afternoons and evenings,” Stackhouse said. “And it looks like El Niño is going to be bringing snow starting late October and going through early winter. If that pans out, you’ll get a nice wet winter.”
