Investigators seek help in shooting at trailer park

Multiple bullets pierce homes; no one injured in Aug. 18 incident

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help regarding shots fired into two residences, with one bullet narrowly missing a child.

The shooting took place about 11:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Newbold Trailer Park, 21062 U.S. Highway 160, near western Durango city limits. An unknown person shot five .45 caliber rounds into two homes at the trailer park, according to a news release from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Eight people were in mobile homes at the time of the shooting, including four children, ages 7 to 13, and four adults, ages 18 to 50. The bullets penetrated the living area of both homes. One bullet entered a bedroom occupied by a child.

No one interviewed saw any person or vehicle leave the area after the shooting.

On the night of the shooting, sheriff’s investigators interviewed 41-year-old Juan Pablo Palma-Godoy, who lives in one of the mobile homes. He was not present at the time of the shooting.

Palma-Godoy told investigators that about 8:30 p.m., he got into an argument with an acquaintance of his, 21-year-old Yordin Viveros-Alonso, also known as Charly Alonso, at Viveros-Alonso’s apartment at 835 East Eighth Ave. in Durango. The argument spilled into the parking area of the apartments, where they began physically fighting.

Palma-Godoy said the fight was broken up by a couple of people who witnessed the altercation.

Investigators and deputies attempted to speak to Viveros-Alonso, but he declined to talk and referred officers to his attorney.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about these incidents to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 247-1112 for a reward. They can also call La Plata County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Sgt. Ed Phippen at 382-7058.
