Back in session, fall events in full swing at The Fort

Summer is coming to a close and we are gearing up for another great year at the Fort.

Each department has planned exciting, beautiful and thought-provoking experiences for you to enjoy. I will get as much information to you as I can fit here each month, but if you’d like to receive emails with even more information, please sign up for the Arts Calendar listserv at: https://www.fortlewis.edu/arts-sciences/ArtsCalendarPublicEvents.aspx

I can’t think of a better way to begin the year than with local favorite, and my friend, Joyce Lyons at the Concert Hall’s annual Jazz on the Hill Endowment Fundraiser at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Seating is limited, so you’ll want to purchase tickets for this worthy cause right away. Your ticket includes appetizers, dinner and Joyce, whose band includes Graydon Peterson (bass), Jay Epstein (drums) and Phil Aaron (keyboard).

Bring your checkbooks and bid on a very special auction: a trip to New York City for a behind-the-scenes view of the performing arts in the Big Apple, Jan. 15 to 18.

Currently at the Art Gallery is “One Hundred Patterns: Ben Barry.” Barry is a visual designer from San Francisco and was one of the first communication designers at Facebook, developing its internal culture, voice and brand. This exhibition focuses on a project in which he created one pattern every day for 100 days.

The Music Department welcomes visiting instructor of voice, Dr. Kerry Ginger. Kerry comes to us from Phoenix, where she earned her degrees at Arizona State University. She is a delightful addition to our staff and you will want to take the opportunity to meet her at our annual Faculty Collage Recital at 3 p.m. on Sept. 20. Your entry, purchased at the door, goes toward music scholarships. Come say hello to old friends and meet new ones at our annual recital and reception!

In the mood to dance? You’ll have an opportunity to do just that on Sept. 23 at the Concert Hall with Matuto Brazil Meets Appalachia at 7:30 p.m. Matuto’s rocking combination of Brazilian forro and American bluegrass creates an infectious and engaging rhythm. The songs sway hips and spark insights, and on stage, the instruments (accordion, guitar, bass, drums, cavaquinho, zabumba and triangle) whirl around the core of Matuto’s sound. It’s an unlikely combination on paper, but on the dance floor, it feels just right.

I hope you’ll be able to join us often during this school year and share in the fun!

Purchase tickets for Concert Hall, Theatre Department and Music Department performances at the Durango Welcome Center, 802 Main Avenue, at www.durangoconcerts.com or call (970) 247-7657.
