Pagosa Springs rises above Ignacio football

Sparks of life on both sides of the ball couldn’t lift the Ignacio High football team to a win.

The Bobcats scored for the first time in three games this year and forced four turnovers, but they still lost 24-6 at Pagosa.

IHS senior quarterback Zach Weinreich threw a touchdown to senior tight end Austin McCaw with 8 minutes, 40 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 12-6 after two 10-yard touchdown runs by Pagosa Springs’ Tyler Cowan.

Nathan Herrera set up the touchdown for the Bobcats with a forced fumble, recovery and a return to the Pirates’ 1-yard line.

Then Ty Kimsey iced the victory for Pagosa Springs (1-2) with 3:15 remaining with a touchdown run.

Cowan added an insurance score with a 53-yard run with 2 minutes remaining to push the margin to 18 for the Pirates.

Pagosa Springs didn’t convert on an extra point in the game, missing three, and Lawrence Valdez blocked the final attempt.

Possession was hard to come by in the second half.

There were five turnovers, three forced by the Bobcats.

IHS (0-3) also gave the ball away three times, too.
